What are we really preparing our children for?

Friday, 13 November 2026, 7pm

Limited Seats Available

Most of us are trying to do right by our children. We give them opportunities. We worry about their confidence, education, friendships and future.

We step in when they struggle. We push when we think they are capable of more.

Most of it comes from love.

But if we are honest, some of it comes from fear too.

Fear they will fall behind. Fear we have not given them enough. Fear they will struggle. Fear we are getting it wrong.

And in the moment, love and fear can look remarkably similar.

That tension has sat underneath so many of the conversations between Rachel Lim and Hwee Keng Maeder in Raising Conscious Humans, a CLOSER series.

And it keeps leading back to one question:
What are we really preparing our children for?

For the world we grew up in?
For the definitions of success that shaped us?
Or for a future none of us can fully predict?

We are taking that conversation out of the podcast and into a room. Not for a parenting checklist.

For a more honest conversation about the humans we are raising, and the humans we may need to become to raise them.

WHAT WE'LL EXPLORE

01

Are we preparing our children
for the world they will actually inherit?

As AI changes what knowledge, work and capability look like, what becomes more important to cultivate in our children?

How much of our parenting comes from conviction, and how much comes from fear?

02

When everyone around us seems to be doing more, pushing harder and intervening sooner, how do we know when something is truly right for our child, and when we are simply afraid not to do it?

03

If achievement is no longer enough, what are we raising them towards instead?

Self-trust. Resilience. Curiosity. Character. Independence. The ability to think, choose, fail, recover and know who they are when nobody is telling them who to be.

There may not be neat answers.
But these feel like questions worth asking before our children grow up.

Rachel and Hwee Keng will go deeper than the podcast, exploring the tensions behind achievement, resilience, independence, education, parental anxiety and raising children for a world none of us can accurately predict.

Then Valentin joins us.

Because parenting philosophies can sound wonderfully clear when one person explains them. Then two people have to raise a family together.

Where did they disagree? Who worried about what?

When did one want to step in while the other wanted to stand back?
What did each have to unlearn?

And how do two people who love the same children deeply build a shared philosophy for their family?

This is not just a mothers' conversation.
It is a conversation for people raising humans.

Rachel Lim

Rachel comes to the conversation as a mother asking many of these questions herself.

A mother of three and homeschooler whose approach to raising her sons first made Rachel question many of her own assumptions about parenting.

Hwee Keng Maeder

Hwee Keng's husband, Valentin Maeder, joins the conversation to talk about what these ideas looked like inside their actual marriage.

This evening will be shaped partly by the people in the room. When you register, we will ask:
What is the question about raising your child that you are wrestling with most right now?

BRING YOUR QUESTION

“Everyone around us does tuition. How do I know whether opting out is courageous or irresponsible?”

Perhaps it is:

“My child gives up when things get hard. When do I encourage and when do I stop pushing?”

“My partner and I parent differently. How do we know what our child actually needs?”

This evening is for you if...

You have ever wondered whether the way you were raised should automatically become the way you raise your children

1

You find yourself looking at what every other family seems to be doing and asking: Should we be doing that too?

2

You want to give your child every possible advantage, while sometimes wondering whether doing too much might take something important away.

3

You are beginning to question whether achievement and success are really the same thing.

4

Or you simply want to be around other people willing to ask these questions honestly.

5

You will not leave with a five-step formula.

Hopefully, you leave with better questions, greater clarity about what matters to your family, and the feeling that you are not the only one figuring this out as you go.

Perhaps the question is not only:
Who do I want my child to become?

Perhaps it is also:
Who do I need to become to raise them?

One Evening.
100 People.
One Question.

Come sit with us.
